Chapter 9

Bowed to the inevitable: An event or occurrance that is inevitable is one that cannot be stopped from occurring. To bow to the inevitable is to realize this fact and resist fighting it. Atticus realizes that, sooner or later, Scout and Jem would be given guns and be thought how to shoot, so he doesn’t try to fight it.

Chapter 10

Break camp: Pack up; move on. In Scout’s case Atticus is telling her to put her gun away and quit her game.

Tooth and nail: To fight someone tooth and nail is to fight that person as fiercely as possible. (Literally with teeth and fingernails if necessary.)

Tribal curse: A family curse or, more aptly, an affliction shared by members of a family. Apparently, many members of the Finch family have had problems with their left eyes.

I thought that this picture represents the setting of To kill a Mockingbird as it fits into the description given in pg5 of the book.
In the 3rd paragraph of pg5 of the book- “Maycomb was an old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the court-house sagged in the square. Somehow, it was hotter then; a black dog suffered on a summer’s day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square.”
I felt that the picture shows the old town of Maycomb. The picture shows a setting of a quiet house in a hot town. It also show alot of dry grass.

House in alabama

I chose this picture for the setting in chapter one for ”To kill the mockingbird” is because it is very much like the scene in the novel and the people in the picture looks like neighbours chatting away and having tea.

I choose this picture because in the passage, it says that they live in the main residential street in town. The sentence is “we lived on the main residential street in town…” (pg 6 ,line 9). This picture is actually a picture of a court-house and the reason i choose this picture is because it is stated in the passage that Atticus’s office is inside the court-house.The sentence is ” Atticus’s office is in the court-house….”. (pg 4, line 37).

I feel that when olden days, the houses have balcony and they always sit outside with neighbours or friends to have tea. This house look exactly as what the olden days houses have and their house distance is very close. They can just go to their neighbour house if they want.

Themes for ” To Kill A Mocking Bird “

Posted in Uncategorized by jiahui on the June 29, 2008

The theme of To Kill a Mockingbird is about human beings of racism happened at America. As a result, prejustice is referring to people such as Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. They are innocent but white people accused them and make them turned into evil people. Atticus thinks that everybody is equal but beause of racism, everything turned unfair throught out the whole story. Espically when Meyella Ewell have no evidence to prove that Tom Robinson raped her, she shows sympathy, and she won the court at last. This is because of racism. Atticus teaches Jem and Scout about racism when he bring his kid to the court. They will know that white people always have the authority to win and other colour people always have the lower authority. In this story, mocking bird represents innocence people because mocking bird sing for us until they die. Thus, to kill a mocking bird is a thing that they kill innocence. Example, they killed Tom Robinson in the end of the story. He is innocent but he died. Throughout the book, Jem, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley is the mocking birds because they have been accused of people’s thinking or hurt by people’s action. For example, Jem was injured because of Bob Ewell. Jem was innocent. Jem’s father, Atticus helped black man in the court so Bob Ewell was not happy with him and wanted to kill his children. Tom Robinson was being accused by raping the white girl but he didnt. Boo Radley in everybody mind is fierce because he seldom appeared outside much. He always hide inside his house. But actually he is a kind person that love children. He always give Jem and Scout things secretly by putting things in the hut of the tree.

2a.) What do you think of them acting as the Radleys?
2b.) “Someone inside the house was laughing.” Who was the person? What was the purpose of this line. Does everything that the author write before this was actually to show the sequence of events?
